Communication Skills for Difficult Situations

  • level 1 – 2 of the NHS knowledge and skills framework
  • level 1 NICE guidance model for psychological assessment and support

Aim:

A one day course to provide participants with an introductory exploration of behaviours which enhance or block communication. The implications of this for the patient and the professional will be considered and participants will learn skills for dealing with difficult situations such as responding to distressed patients and relatives.

Advanced Communication

Aim:

To develop the core communication skills for supporting patients and families in situations such as bereavement or breaking bad news. Using an evidence-based model participants will have the opportunity to reflect on personal and cultural barriers to effective communication, practice skills, share strategies and receive feedback.

NH3132 Effective Communication: a humanistic approach to palliative care

  • (15 credits at level three)
  • Level 3 of the NHS knowledge and skills framework
  • Level 2 NICE guidance model for psychological assessment and support

Aim:

A core module for the BSc (Hons) in Palliative Care, this course mirrors the content of the 3 day Advanced Communication Skills but additionally offers a theoretical framework for understanding human interaction and further opportunities for reflection and skills development. Competent practice will be assessed by analysis of a formative and summative taped interaction. The module may be taken as a ‘stand-alone’ or towards another award.

Longer Courses

MSc Multi-Professional Palliative Care

The flexible MSc pathway offered by the School of Health at the University of Wolverhampton provides an excellent foundation for a multi-disciplinary masters route in palliative care.

This Masters degree will meet the requirements of Allied Health Professionals (AHP’s) qualifying at degree level who are seeking a specialist qualification in palliative care. ‘Agenda for Change’ and the ‘Knowledge and Skills Framework’ (2004) are likely to encourage senior staff to pursue studies at Level 4 and this programme will provide practitioners with the requirements of the framework in tandem with a postgraduate degree. In view of the developments within the speciality, health care professionals are required to work collaboratively across boundaries utilising advanced knowledge and skills for the benefit of all individuals with a life-limiting illness.

Award Duration:

  • Part time up to 5 years

  • Case managers
  • Heart, Lung and Renal Nurses

BSc (Hons) Palliative Care

This award affords the opportunity to develop specialist clinical skills and knowledge to enhance both quality patient care and career development opportunities.

Award duration:

  • Part time up to 5 years

Aimed at:

Health and social care professionals with a particular interest in palliative care

Entry requirements

  • Professional registration or qualified in specific discipline.
  • Diploma of Higher Education or equivalent. Applicants not meeting this criteria may be considered regarding their professional experience.
  • You must be employed in an area of professional practice that encounters clients with supportive or palliative care needs.

All modules may be accessed as ‘stand-alone’ or as electives as part of another award

NH3225 Holistic Management in Palliative Care for Community Practitioners

(15 credits at level three)

This module aims to equip community practitioners with knowledge, understanding and skill in the principles of holistic management of patients with palliative care needs. Students will have the opportunity to critically analyse local and national guidelines and their implications for service delivery.

Aimed at:

Any community health and social care professionals whose work brings them into contact with patients who have a life-limiting illness or chronic condition.

Prospects:

This module may be counted towards other BSc pathways within the School of Health. Studying at this level enhances career development.

Module duration:

  • Five taught days + two placement days over one semester.

NH3310 Psychosocial Issues in Cancer Care

(15 credits at level three)

This module aims to develop knowledge and understanding of psychosocial issues in cancer care and their application to high quality service delivery. In particular students will be encouraged to consider person-centred versus problem-focused models of intervention as an appropriate means of providing truly holistic care.

Prospectus:

This module is core to the BSc (Hons) Cancer care but may be counted towards other BSc pathways within the School of Health including the BSc (Hons) Palliative Care. Studying at this level enhances career development.

Aimed at:

Any health and social care professionals whose work brings them into contact with patients who have cancer or any other life-limiting illness or chronic condition.

Lymphoedema Modules

(15 or 30 credits per module at level three)

These modules afford the opportunity to develop specialist clinical skills and knowledge to enhance both quality patient care and career development opportunities. Students applying for Module 2 must have completed Module 1 or be an experienced Lymphoedema specialist.

Aimed at:

  • Health and social care professionals with a particular interest in palliative care and lymphoedema management. Participants must hold a registered qualification in health or social care.

Prospectus:

  • These modules may be counted towards other BSc pathways within the School of Health. Studying at this level enhances career development.

Modules:

  • Module 1 Management of mild/moderate lymphoedema (15 credits)
  • Module 2 Management of complex lymphoedema (double module 30 credits)

All modules may be accessed as ‘stand-alone’ or as electives as part of another award.

Skills and knowledge gained on this programme can be appropriately used to enhance the care that you offer to individuals with a life-limiting illness at any stage of their journey. The core modules lead you to examine the provision of palliative care and to develop competent communication, reflective and academic skills.

Award duration:

Aimed at:

  • All health & social care professionals
  • Individuals working in or having an interest in palliative care

Entry requirements:

Professional registration or qualified in specific discipline, with 12 months post-qualification experience. Applicants not meeting this criterion will be considered regarding their professional experience.
