Light up a Life for Compton this Christmas
Compton Hospice is inviting people to let their love shine this Christmas with their ‘Light up a Life’ appeal. Loved ones are at the forefront of our minds during the festive season, so what better time to remember those we have loved and lost with the gift of a unique dedication?
People are invited to send the Hospice a short message which will be recorded in a Book of Dedication and to ‘Light up a Life’ on the Hospice’s ‘Tree of Life’ in honour of someone special. Appeal Leaflets can be obtained from the Hospice.
In return, they will receive a memento to place on their own Christmas tree affirming that a light is shining in honour of their loved one.
Proceeds from the appeal will help maintain the ongoing services of the Hospice, so by making a donation in return for their tribute, people will provide the gift of support to the patients and families that are currently facing the challenge of illness.
Compton Candle-lit Service
A candle-lit service is being held in the Hospice grounds on Sunday, December 11 at 3.00 pm, where the ‘Tree of Life’ will be lit and the Book of Dedication will be available to view.
The Hospice’s Chaplain, Hilary Smart, will conduct the Remembrance Service and the Salvation Army Band will accompany the singing of Christmas Carols.
Tracy Marsh, Head of Fundraising at Compton Hospice, said: “It was my first ‘Light up a Life’ ceremony last year and I found it both moving and uplifting. My Dad had recently died of cancer and Christmas was always his favourite time of year. To have the opportunity to still ‘buy him’ such a special present - a light on the tree - meant a lot to me.”
For more information on how to ‘Light up a Life’ this Christmas, or to apply for free tickets for the ceremony, contact the Fundraising Department at the Hospice on 0845 2255 497.

Compton Wins National Charity Shop Awards
At the National Association of Charity Shops Annual Conference held at Keele University on July 4th and 5th, Compton Hospice won two national awards. Firstly, the Award for the Highest Average Profit Per Shop for 2005, and secondly, awarded to Comptons’ Womboune Shop, the Award for the Shop Team of the Year 2005. The Awards were presented by Helen Lederer, famous for her time at the Comedy Store. The awards are a great honour as they recognize key achievements and performance in charity retailing across the whole of the sector which includes charities as large as Oxfam, Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation through the medium sized charities such as Sense and YMCA, to the smaller Hospice charity shop operations.
Flagship Wolverhampton Store Gets New Facelift!
Comptons charity shop in School Street, Wolverhampton town centre is currently undergoing a major refurbishment. The shop has been open for over 12 years bringing in thousands of pounds for the Hospice, and as our flagship
town centre shop, was in serious need of a facelift in order that it can continue to bring in the money for years to come. Works are now nearly complete and the shop will re-open in the week commencing 18th July. We urge all of our existing customers (and hopefully many new customers) to come and visit our new look shop soon. We would also like to advise people that we are now gladly accepting donations into this shop.
Merry Hill is shop number 15 for Compton!
On Thursday 10th February 2005, our 15th charity shop opened in Merry Hill, Wolverhampton. Pictured cutting the ribbon are Mary Jones, Chairman of Comptons' Trading Company, Sharon Knowles the Shop Manager, and several of the newly recruited volunteers who will help to run the shop.
In the first 2 days of opening, the shop took over £650 and it is expected that the shop will contribute over £25,000 every year towards the care of patients with terminal illnesses.
Please look at some of the pictures showing our beautiful, light and clean new shop – we hope they will tempt you to come and visit us to buy goods, donate your unwanted goods, or even to become a volunteer!
Merry Hill shop is open Monday to Saturday from 9.00 a.m. until 4.00 p.m. and the telephone number for any enquiries is 01902 765634

Lin and Angela, the two Shop Managers, together with all the volunteers, would love to see you!
They have excellent high quality items for sale, so why not call in when passing? There is plenty of free parking right outside the shop, so it is easy to drop off your donations too!
