Hospice to set up Shropshire’s first charity superstore
Around ten jobs are set to be created if plans for Shropshire’s first charity ‘superstore’ are given the go-ahead.
Wolverhampton’s Compton Hospice wants to open the store at an 8,500 sq ft former Rover showroom in Stafford Park.
An application has been submitted to the council and is awaiting consideration.
Compton’s retail manager Sue Chance said: “We want to set up a store within easy reach of Telford Town Centre as we have a great deal of supporters across Shropshire.
“The unit at Stafford Park would be ideal with all the floor space we need to display our full range of goods.
“Our intention is to establish a high quality charity superstore, professionally fitted and run. Three full-time and eight part-time staff would be needed initially, and we would hope to attract around 60 volunteers.”
The Telford store would add to the hospice’s other 15 successful outlets across Wolverhampton, Dudley, South Staffordshire and Sandwell.
Compton Hospice provides in-patient, home-nursing and respite care for people living with a terminal illness and their families.
The chosen location would reflect the fact that more than 4,000 regular supporters of Compton Hospice live in the area the superstore would serve.
Ms Chance added: “Because the hospice is sited at Wolverhampton, people don’t realise what a huge area we cover.
“Over the past twelve months, it has spent almost £120,000 on services for people in Shropshire.
“The store would not only give local people a ‘one-stop’ shop to buy high quality, low cost goods but would offer them the opportunity to lend their support to the continuation of this vital service in their area.”
The superstore would also provide a centre for large scale recycling, reducing waste collection demands and landfill costs. Dedicated vans will collect and deliver bulky items.
Donated items on sale will include home and garden furniture, electrical goods, giftware, clothing, toys and household wares.
